The pricing of tabletop role-playing games can be a contentious subject. There is always tension between what creators need to charge and what customers are willing to pay.
I’ve put together a list of the most expensive RPGs ever released. Of course, there have been Kickstarter pledge levels higher than these. However, these are the most expensive retail prices for RPGs.
The World’s Largest Dungeon – Originally $99.95
The mammoth tome that is The World’s Largest Dungeon was released in 2004. The book reportedly contained more than 1,000 pages and more than 16,000 encounters.
It was the first RPG or RPG supplement that neared the one-hundred-dollar mark. In fact, it even holds a Guinness World Record for the most expensive role-playing game ever.
The World’s Largest Dungeon is now available in ebook and at a significantly reduced price from its initial release.
Please keep in mind this product was designed for the Third Edition of Dungeons and Dragons.
Invisible Sun – $99.00
When Invisible Sun was released it created quite a stir in the RPG community and it even reached the pages of Forbes. It clocked in at 99 dollars just a few cents under the record price of The World’s Largest Dungeon.
This is no simple tabletop role-playing by any means. Check out a partial list of what the hundred dollars gets you when you buy this RPG.
- Four game books totalling over 600 pages:
- The Key: A 208-page book on character creation and options.

- The Path: 148 pages detailing Satyrine, the realms under the eight suns, and other elements of the game setting.

DriveThru RPG Bundles
Of course, bundles of products can be expensive (and rightly so). DriveThruRPG allows publishers to bundle a great many products together. Many of these are well more than two hundred or three hundred dollars.
The most expensive of these are stock art bundles or lifetime subscriptions.
There are some map bundles like 2020-2021 Cybermaps Exclusives 4K [BUNDLE] and 2021 Exclusive maps in 4K [BUNDLE]. Plus dungeon maps like 5E Fantasy Grounds [BUNDLE] and Add On Dungeons All 2021 [BUNDLE].
High-Priced Role-playing Games
While the RPG products listed here in this blog post are highly-priced, it is clear they offer lots of material for that price. Also, most of the bundles are greatly discounted compared to buying the products individually.
Interesting, but not what I was hoping for when I saw the subject line. What are the most expensive RPGs in terms of the total cost of multiple core books and supplements so widely-used as to be virtually necessary?
